Soap: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2024)

This classic comedy series is a satire on all the daytime soaps out there. The stories revolve around a rich family, the Tates, and a blue-collar family, the Campbells. With stories mostly centered around crazy characters and sex, the escapades are as soapy as you can get: divorce, homosexuality, adultery, kidnapping, organized crime, war flashbacks, custody battles, murder and amnesia.

Scott S Hilarious. The comedy still holds up, and its sense of humor and topics are still somewhat edgy for a show that's nearly 50 years old. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This really is one of the most classic TV series of all time. A hugely enjoyable send-up of the soap opera genre. It has brilliant scripts, acting and direction. Despite its age - over 40 years old - it is remarkably fresh. I'm watching again for the first time since it first aired and I cannot believe how ridiculously funny it still is. It should be rescreened, but definitely not remade. The combination of the scripts and the acting results in some remarkably risqué characterisations. It was a first in having a gay man (brilliantly and courageously played by Billy Crystal at a time when no known actor would even consider playing a gay character) who is not only "out" but also very ordinary and normal. Comparing this character to The Boys in the Band (play and film) from the same era, where all the characters seem tortured, screwed up and unhappy, demonstrates how ground breaking Soap was in its day. This series put "gay as normal" into the mainstream of television. The black butler, perfectly played by Robert Guillaumes, is a brilliantly crafted character who gets many of the best put down lines and delivers them perfectly, confronting many of the racial stereotypes of the time. He might have the most subservient role in the house, but never fails to demonstrate that he is the character most in control of the entire household. A sane beacon of common sense in a house where all the other occupants are deranged in varying degrees. Soap has huge cultural and historic significance. Plot-wise, without spoiling things for those who have not yet seen it, expect anything to happen - from the usual infidelities of soap operas to demonic baby possession and alien abduction. If that doesn't whet your appetite to watch the entire series, I don't know what would. Soap is up there with the best.
